Support Belwood Lodge and Camp

Our Most Important Asset

Children, youth and adults who are mentally challenged from across Ontario enjoy Belwood Lodge & Camp. Our campers typically have Down Syndrome, Autism, CP, OCD, Tourette's Syndrome, PDD, developmental delays and a large range of other conditions. Many have other underlying issues such as epilepsy, diabetes, are non-verbal, special dietary needs and behavioural concerns. The majority of our campers are unable to attend other recreational camps due to their functioning abilities and the quantity of experienced supervision they require. Many of our campers have attended yearly for 20 plus years.

Outside of Camp many campers have daily struggles to be part of a group and to behave as expected by society. Whether at school, doing sports or outside in the community expectations are placed on them to conform to the norm.

Belwood Lodge & Camp accepts them for who they are and what challenges they face on a daily basis. We encourage them to be themselves, focus on their strengths and have a great time.

Camp is a major focus in their lives. It is a place they feel safe, enjoy themselves and most importantly feel part of the group. When individuals with very limited speech and vocabulary say the word "Camp" we know the importance it plays in their lives.

The Need

All families and support providers confirm the need for a well supervised creative residential camp program for our campers. The demands are clearly seen by the continued increase in our waiting lists and high demand for our programs.

Belwoods' campers face challenges daily but while at camp they are willing to try new activities and develop skills in areas where outside of camp they would be hesitant. That is exactly what we're going to give them. The revitalization of Belwood Lodge and Camp will lead to the introduction and increase in activities, more modern and accessible facilities and a new outlook on what every camper can achieve.

The volunteer Board of Directors focuses greatly on keeping camp fees at a minimum. The majority of individuals who attend receive a limited pension and are on very tight budgets. Our fees are set up according to the length of stay with the average cost being $840 for a two week stay. The Kiwanis Club of Guelph sponsors camp by providing the property and buildings. We do not receive any government funding and this is our first year of seeking support through fundraising efforts and support from individuals, corporations and foundations to help enhance and revitalize our camp.
